„(Bill's) coolness, however, is often a mask for the re pressed
intensity of e motion seething underneath his calm exterior. This
scene contributes to the idea that the later narrative is fabricated out of
Bill's experiences at the Ziegler party and Alice's confession. Certainly, it is
at Ziegler's party that much of the «dream movie» has its germination. Bill
encounters two models, Nuala (Stewart Thorndike) and Gayle (Louise Taylor), who offer to take him to «where the rainbow ends.» Later in the film,
he ends up at Rainbow Fashions in need of a costume to attend the orgy at
the Somerton mansion (Summer Town? The site of the orgy itself recalls
the Cape Cod locale of the naval officer story). The storefront window at
Rainbow Fashions also has a sign that says «under the rainbow» on its base ment
window.” (excerpt from Mario Falsetto - Stanley Kubrick: A Narrative and Stylistic Analysis, New and expanded second edition, Praeger, 2001)
