Martin Sheen (as Kit in Badlands - a film Written, Directed and Produced by Terrence Malick, 1973): I don’t know if viewers realize it, but Terrence Malick appears in the film. In one scene with me. And I love playing it with him. I just loved cracking him up, ‘cause everytime I’d open the door and say “Hi”, he’d start laughing. But he always said to me: “I’m gonna reshoot that scene with another actor from your point of view. I had to shoot it at that time because we were losing that location.” And I said: I will never, ever reshoot that scene again with anyone. And it was the only contentious thing we had between us in 30 years. He got angry with me. I remember coming back to L.A. He was still talking about it. He said: “You know, we gotta get outhere, we gotta find a way to, you know, reshoot that.” I said: Not with me. Then he said: “Come on, Martin, we have to do that.” And I said: No, Sir. I will never, ever reshoot that scene. No, that’s there forever as far as I’m concerned. And I’m so glad it is. Dacă în acea scenă, Terrence Malick, notoriu pentru aversiunea sa față de expunerea mediatică (omul trăiește aproape ca un eremit), a fost obligat de împrejurări să apară în rolul unui agent de vânzări (actorul angajat inițial nu a mai apărut la filmări, plus partea cu eliberarea locației menționată de Sheen), în cea care urmează, intră în cadru din pur histrionism.
Să pornim de la premisa plauzibilă, de altfel, că în primul caz există - pentru avizați - șanse de a identifica personajul. Ei bine, îmi permit să afirm că în al doilea, șansele sunt minuscule, dacă nu cumva tind spre 0. În film, secvența e aproape invizibilă. Sunt absolut convins că la o vizionare clasică, adică într-o sală de cinema, 9 din 10 spectatori ar mătura din memorie acest insert în... insert (zic așa deoarece bucata asta, pe care Malick o virează în sepia, face parte dintr-un fel de documentar, introdus en passant și individualizat, după cum se vede, nu doar cromatic, ci extrem de personal). Cu toate acestea, acolo e Malick. You have to take my words for granted! Bine, există și opțiunea b: puteți să (mă) verificați!
