Der Siebente Kontinent is the ultimate anthitesis of a „feel good movie”. Calling it dark and depressing would be the understatement of the decade. It excedees all levels of bleak. I was reminded of Bresson's cropped framing during the film and then found Bresson's own statement on this Haneke debut: „Not beautiful photography, not beautiful pictures, but rather necessary pictures, necessary photography”.
